It does not seem to be font-related as we tried different themes, for example and it shows the same behaviour. Due to the way GRUB Legacy (grub-0.97) and GRUB2 were slotted in Gentoo, both versions of GRUB may be installed on the same system at the same time however, only one version at a time may be installed in the Master Boot Record (MBR) of a hard drive.
